Maddie Gets Married: When Decisions Get Hard

I’m not going to lie, I’ve got it pretty easy. Nate and I both have parents who love and support us and are willing to gift us a beautiful wedding weekend. We have friends and family who have so sweetly celebrated us during this season of engagement. I have the best and most even-keeled fiancé who has made this whole process so enjoyable. Oh, and I’m getting paid to be a part of planning my own wedding. THE DREAM.

But that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook from making hard decisions. We’ve got two big decisions out of the way, but those impact the budget which impacts the guest list which impacts everything else, and it’s just hard.

For those of you who have been through this process – or may be going through it now – I’m sure you’re all too familiar with the oftentimes difficult, albeit uncomfortable, conversations that just have to be had to get down to your final numbers.

I’m an idealist by nature and a people person to a fault, with a serious case of FOMO – aka I want all of my people there, and I want them to experience all of my dreams come to life for our big day.

And when my mom, Nate, and I were in Winston for our initial meeting, I honestly walked into the budget conversation feeling fully confident that we could have everything we wanted work magically within our budget. When I saw the final numbers, my heart sank a little. They weren’t outrageous by any means, but I knew they meant making some changes to the original plan. I could tell the conversation wasn’t the easiest for my mom, either, and when talking through some changes we could make, she said “I may have my opinions one way or the other, but ultimately, I want you both to have the wedding you want to have. And if that means making some changes elsewhere to accommodate for a band or whatever it may be, we should make that decision on what is most important to you both.”

That’s what I’ve been reminding myself of over the past few days as we finalize some of these major decisions – what is most important to us. At the end of the day, we’ll be married (!!!) and surrounded by the people we love most dancing the night away. And whatever changes we make to accommodate for this, that, and the other, the team at RRE will no doubt deliver the wedding of our dreams.
